Is this (the last line) the difference people is talking about? They were placed side by side and participants were asked which version they preferred. Overall it looks to me like a child used different color pencil to write each letter. Diagonal and round features of the font will not have full coverage of the pixel and thus will return some shade of gray, reflecting the coverage of the underlying pixel.
