the problem here is a huge copyright issue trying to be resolved by microsoft. From the Playback tab, select speakers and click Set Default. A third way to do what I want to do is to use a splitter on the SPDIF output.
All that doom and gloom in 7.1? (actually, in my case more like 3.1...) Yikes! Set up external players to use SPDIF. (going to loose windows sounds on the AVR) Run HDMI cable to TV, then run SPDIF from TV to AVR. Enjoy. have HD but no devices!

A fibre SPIF cable is running to the living. The card I presently have in the machine is a Xonar DS with an optical SPDIF output (TOSLINK). Can anyone please confirm this? Ive split upto 3 devices and sound is stable.
erich when i get to the recording tab and right click, it already has it highlighted but doesnt display anything other than the microphone tab.
